The Top 5 Reasons Why People Fail at Consulting Interviews

Consulting Interviews

At Vienna Consultancy we have helped numerous candidates prepare for interviews at different organizations. Despite all the great efforts we’ve seen many candidates fail in interviews as they have all the qualities that are needed to be successful and a great background also.

To help you avoid the same things, we’ve wrapped up the top five reasons why high potential candidates also fail in consulting interviews.? In this article, we will discuss the major reasons why people fail at consulting interviews.

Under Practiced

As we all know the competition level is already so high that it takes a huge number of practice cases with other competitors to reach a high level of competence to grab a secure position among other competitors of succeeding in case interviews.

But for that much practice, you need a lot of time and patience that often candidates fail to do. But it is really necessary to understand how to succeed in case of interviews among your competitors.

If you are under-practised this means your chances are getting lower for the selection process.

Trying To Go Too Quickly

Some candidates feel the pressure to do extraordinary in their interview which leads them to speed up and end up creating a mess.

If you are too quick for the interview then it can put you at risk of making lots of mistakes, reduces the opportunity to identify deeper insights, and can affect your communication with the interviewer. In hurry, you can only spoil the situation by not giving proper answers to the questions. But on the other hand, if you are calm and relaxed then the situation will be directly in your favour.

By slowing down, you’ll allow yourself to be more thoughtful about the situation, making it far more likely to find ways to stand out with unique ideas and carefully considered answers. This will be very beneficial for you while communicating with others.

Being Tired

As we all know, facing a new interview is not an easy job at all. We see many great candidates are not able to clear interviews because they’ve gotten too tired.

This often isn’t the case when you’ve had a full hectic day of interviews and now you are facing this one as you are already tired with all that late-night preparations for the interview, or if you’ve arrived directly from a far distance.

So, give yourself mental peace and good sleep, and don’t rush for unnecessary things.

Being Robotic

This mistake is very common to those who have prepared like a Champion. They may have applied all the right tactics, nailed all the queries, and communicated in the right way, but they lost track of the question.

From the interviewer’s perspective, they have just under an hour to decide whether they’d want to work with you on their team at their terms and conditions, so being perfect yet robotic is unlikely to win you good company in the organization.

Instead, use your new and innovative ideas and impressive skills as a reliable base and focus on your answers by remembering to be human too! Connecting with the interviewer is one of the most important things to do. By connecting with the interviewer, you can exchange your thoughts and get to know more about each other. If they are impressed with your thoughts then this will help them to choose you during the selection process.

Under-Preparing For The Fit Interview

Many candidates focus most of their preparation time on the interview and they wrongly assume that the fit interview is similar to other interviews they’ve done in the past. Every interview is different on its terms as everyone has their mission and vision for their organization.

This simply isn’t true.

The fit interview requires some thought and makes it a high-risk strategy. Although you also don’t need to over-prepare and rehearse again and again for the interview, all you need is that you should have a clear idea of how to express yourself and also how the messages you want to convey in this section of the interview. Or simply how to put your thoughts in words to give them a clear vision of your answers.

In addition to these five points, which you can anticipate, there are some reasons outside of your control as to why someone who has the capability and background for consulting might not get the job.

For example, the organization may have already reached its recruitment limit by the point you go under the interview process. In other words, luck is also a major factor in securing an offer at a top organization.

Hence, it’s also important to apply for several job openings at the same time as you should have some backup plans if things don’t work out the way you want them to. By doing this you can also find the different opportunities that are offered by other organizations and you also have a choice to choose the best among all.
